MATCH PREVIEW
This is the one they don't want us to win
Aston Villa at home on the 19th, and I can already write the headline they've got waiting if it doesn't go our way. Rebuild stalls again. Pressure mounts on De Zerbi. Same three sentences they've had loaded since August. Let's talk about why they won't need them.

Here's what nobody wants to say about a home game like this one. We're not fighting Aston Villa on Saturday. We're fighting a narrative that got written weeks ago and is just waiting for a scoreline to attach itself to. Win comfortably and it becomes "papering over the cracks." Win narrowly and it becomes "still not convincing." Lose and it writes itself. There is no version of this result that the same three voices haven't already scripted, which tells you everything about how much they actually care about what happens on the pitch.
I'd love to tell you this is just paranoia talking. It isn't. Watch how differently a shaky start gets covered depending on which club is having it. A club rebuilding through boring, expensive patience gets called fragile. A club rebuilding through reckless spending gets called ambitious. Same process, same September, wildly different verdicts, and I promise you it isn't about the football.
What actually matters on Saturday
Not the headline. Not the punditry queue lining up their opening line before kickoff. What matters is sixty-two thousand people inside the best stadium in this country, still turning up, still singing, still believing in a project most of the country has already decided to write off before it's finished. That's not blind loyalty. That's just paying attention to what's actually being built here while everyone else watches the scoreline and calls it the whole story.
De Zerbi doesn't need the country's patience by Saturday teatime. He needs about six more months of it. What he's going to get instead is a verdict delivered by full time, from people who've already decided what they wanted to write regardless of what happens in between.
They can have the headline. We'll take the stadium, the shirt, and the next home game after this one, whatever Saturday brings.
So here's my actual prediction, and it has nothing to do with the scoreline. Whatever happens on the 19th, by Monday someone will have found a way to make it about the rebuild being in crisis. That's not analysis. That's a script with the ending already filled in. I'd just like it on record, before kickoff, that I noticed.
