STADIUM

The stadium has its own trophy cabinet, and it is already full

Nobody wants to talk about the building when the results are hard, so let me be the one who does. While the football has been difficult this month, the stadium it happens in has quietly been the best in its class for years, and I am done pretending that does not count for something.

The Royal Institute of British Architects gave our stadium a London Award, and the judging panel called it a tour de force in stadium design. That is not a fan saying that. That is architecture's own professional body, the people whose entire job is being unimpressed by buildings, choosing to be impressed by this one anyway.

It is also the largest club football ground in London and the third largest in the entire country. Say that slowly to yourself next time someone tries to tell you this club thinks small. You do not build the biggest home in the capital by accident, and you certainly do not do it by cutting corners.

Proof that has nothing to do with football

When Beyoncé brought the Renaissance World Tour through, our stadium hosted more nights of it than anywhere else on the run, and that residency became the highest grossing engagement in history by a woman, by a Black artist, and by any American artist, full stop. That happened on our turf, under our roof, in a building this club built with its own money rather than someone else's takeover.

They can review our league form every single week. I will keep pointing at the one part of this club that already has the receipts, in a trophy cabinet built from concrete and steel instead of silver.

Why this actually matters

A club with nothing going for it does not attract that level of scrutiny and pass it every time. Architects do not hand out awards to make anyone feel better. Global tours do not choose venues out of sentiment. Every one of those decisions was made by people with no reason to be kind to us, and they all landed the same way regardless. Which is exactly why they are the only verdicts on this club I trust. The moment you leave the independent judges behind and step back inside football, the scoring changes. Every time. Funny, that.

So keep the football conversation going, because I am having it too. Just do not act surprised when I remind you what this club has already proven it can build, long before a ball is ever kicked inside it.
