RECRUITMENT

Bringing in Omar Marmoush was real ambition, and nobody wants to credit us for it

This summer this club went and got Omar Marmoush. A forward good enough that plenty of bigger names were watching the same conversation. That is not a club drifting. That is a club identifying quality and going out to get it, on purpose.

Here is what actually happened this summer, stripped of the noise. This club identified a forward it wanted, did the work to bring him in, and added real quality to a squad that needed it. That is the entire story. Everything else attached to it since has been about timing, not talent, and those are two completely different conversations that keep getting mashed into one lazy headline.

De Zerbi has already said plainly that a late arrival cost this squad valuable time together before the season started. Fine. That is an honest, specific, fixable problem. It has nothing to do with whether signing Marmoush in the first place was the right call, and I notice how quickly those two separate facts get blurred into one convenient narrative about a club getting it wrong.

What ambition actually looks like

Ambition is not always a headline fee shouted across back pages in July. Sometimes it is quietly identifying the player other recruitment departments were also circling, and winning that conversation. That happened here. Nobody wants to give a financially prudent club credit for smart recruitment, because smart and prudent do not fit the lazy story certain people would rather tell about how this club operates. It suits every rival boardroom in this league for Tottenham to look like a club that cannot close a deal, and the journalists who depend on those boardrooms for their exclusives are only too happy to help them.

Judge the business by the player, not by the week he happened to arrive in.

The part that gets skipped

A club with nothing going for it does not attract genuine quality in a competitive market. Players and their people do their own research before signing anywhere. Marmoush's people did that research and still said yes. That tells you something real about what this club actually looks like from the inside, whatever the outside version of the story keeps insisting.
