Andy Robertson chose us, and tonight he walks back into Anfield on the other side
Andy Robertson left Liverpool as a free agent this summer and signed for us. Tonight he walks back into Anfield in a different shirt, and every pundit is going to call that awkward. I call it the clearest character reference this club has had all year.

A player does not need to sign for a new club as a free agent. He can pick almost anywhere. Robertson picked us, and when he passes Kenny Dalglish as Scotland's most capped player, he will do it in our shirt. That decision happened before a ball was kicked this season, made with a clear head and no release clause forcing his hand, and it tells you more about how this club is actually run than a hundred column inches from people who have never set foot inside the building.
Tonight the media wants this to be a story about awkwardness. Of course it does. A player of that standing choosing Tottenham is exactly the story the rest of this league cannot afford to have told straight. A player facing his old teammates, his old ground, his old song in the stands. Fine, let them write that version. I am watching a different one. A defender with real medals experienced this club up close for years and then chose to spend the next stage of his career here anyway. That is not a footnote. That is a verdict, delivered by someone who actually knew what he was choosing between.
No fear of a shootout
There is no VAR in this round. Level after ninety minutes and it goes straight to penalties, no screens, no review, just nerve. I like that. This club does not need a monitor to tell it what it saw. Give us a shootout at Anfield and let whoever actually turns up on the night settle it.
Robertson already made his choice about this club months ago. Tonight the rest of the country just gets to watch him prove he was right.
What I actually want from tonight
Not a moral victory. Not a narrow story about one man's homecoming. I want ninety minutes, or penalties if it comes to that, where the shirt he chose to wear this summer looks like exactly the right decision by full time.
