They are calling Saturday a clash of crisis clubs, and only one side actually believes it

The preview pieces are already out, and more than one of them has reached for the same lazy phrase. Crisis clubs. Two winless sides meeting at our place on Saturday. I have read the team news. I still think only one dressing room actually believes that description applies to them.

Let me deal with the honest part first, because I always do. De Zerbi is without Wilson Odobert, Xavi Simons, and Mykhaylo Mudryk through injury, and both Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie are being monitored after missing the Everton game. That is a real, thin squad heading into a game that matters. I am not going to pretend otherwise.

Here is what I will not accept, though. The word crisis gets applied to two clubs in identical circumstances and somehow still lands differently depending on which one you support. Villa's absentee list is just as long. Their manager is just as winless this season. Yet somehow the preview pieces keep finding softer language for one side of this fixture than the other. That is not individual writers choosing words by accident. It is the house style of an industry that decided a long time ago which clubs get sympathy and which get scrutiny.

About that head-to-head record

Villa have won four of the last five meetings between these two clubs, and I am not going to insult anyone by pretending that number does not exist. What I will say is that a history built on different squads, different managers, and different circumstances tells you almost nothing about ninety minutes played this Saturday. A record is not a prophecy. It is just the last time somebody kept score. And the last time somebody kept score, we won 2-1 at Villa Park.

Call it a crisis match if that headline writes itself easier. I call it a home game, at our stadium, with everything still to prove.

Why home advantage actually means something here

This is not a trip to somebody else's fortress. This is our ground, our crowd, our name on the door. Whatever the preview pieces want to call Saturday, they are watching it happen in the one place this squad should feel most like itself. That matters more than any word a headline writer reaches for on a Wednesday.
