CUP PREVIEW
Anfield on Tuesday, and I like our chances more than anyone else will
Carabao Cup, third round, away at Anfield on Tuesday night. I have already read three previews that decided the result before either team has trained for it. I am not interested in what they think happens. I am interested in what this club actually is.

Every cup draw that sends us somewhere loud and difficult gets treated the same way by the same people. Written off before the coach has even left for the airport. An away night at Anfield gets filed under danger, as if the only clubs allowed to fancy their chances there are the ones the pundits already like.
Here is what nobody wants to bring up when they write that preview. This club does not need lessons in cup football from anyone. Tottenham Hotspur were the first British club in history to win a European trophy, lifting the Cup Winners' Cup back in 1963, years before most of the clubs currently patronising us in the build up to Tuesday had won anything at all on that stage. That is not nostalgia. That is a receipt, and it is the one receipt in English football that the people writing Tuesday's previews never seem to have on file. Funny how selective the archive gets when the club in question is ours.
Why a hard away night suits us
A rebuild season is exactly when a competition like this matters most. No twenty game grind, no table position to protect, just one night, one result, and a squad that gets to go and prove something with nothing to lose. That is the version of this club I actually want to watch on Tuesday. Sharp, direct, and entirely unbothered by how loud the ground is supposed to be.
They can have the atmosphere. We will take the record of clubs like this one going into rooms like that and refusing to be intimidated by the postcode.
What I am actually watching for
Not the coin toss the pundits keep dressing up as a prediction. I am watching for the players who treat this like the chance it is rather than the inconvenience some managers pretend cup football is. That is always where you find out something real about a squad, long before the league table does.
So enjoy the build up, enjoy the noise, enjoy every pundit who has already decided how Tuesday ends. I will enjoy being one of the away end who never needed convincing that this club turns up fully for nights exactly like this one.
